Our Story

TropiCoffee sells shade-grown bottled iced coffee in four flavors, as well as one rotating seasonal flavor, available in cases of 12 and 24 bottles.

Shade-grown coffee is the traditional method of cultivating coffee beans. Coffee beans are naturally intolerant of direct sunlight and require shade from a canopy of trees to grow. In 1972 however, new hybrid coffee beans were developed to grow in the sun, producing larger harvests and beans that are smaller and easier to pick. New “sun-grown” coffee is dependent on large amounts of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, in contrast to shade-grown coffee which requires no chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Since 1972, 60% of coffee farmlands have been converted to grow these new hybrid coffee beans, stripping the land of their trees. The loss of so many trees covering coffee farmlands has led to an estimated 20% decline in migratory bird populations in just the last ten years. We are dedicated to promoting a healthier environment by selling coffee certified shade-grown by the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center. This protects the crucial habitats that many animal rely on. Our company is also helping in the fight against climate change, as preserving the rainforest canopy reduces the carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere by deforestation. We believe it is our responsibility to take care of our environment which is why we produce the most eco-friendly coffee available.

Our Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center Bird Friendly certification affects our coffee growers, too. We value our farmers and all our coffee is grown by farmers earning a fair living wage. This certification proves our commitment to fair wages.
